13th Colony Southern Gin Awarded a Gold Medal
Thirteenth Colony Distilleries’ Southern Gin is awarded a gold medal by The Spirits International Prestige (SIP) Awards competition in San Diego, California. Southern Gin is the South Georgia based distilleries’ third and most recent small batch product, released in February 2010.
The award gives merit to what we at Thirteenth Colony determined early on: to make distilled spirits we would be proud to serve our friends and family, the highest quality product at a price within reach of most. The phrase ‘made by friends for friends’ is often heard around the distillery. Southern Gin is a result of a group of South Georgia friends, growing, distilling, and bottling spirits for their friends and family to enjoy. The goal was to create a light bodied gin that did not overpower the pallet. The result was a refreshingly clean and crisp spirit, with aromas of juniper berries, botanicals, and hints of citrus.
Southern Gin is an extension of Thirteenth Colony’s Southern Brand, which began with the release of Southern Vodka in August of 2009, both distributed through Empire Distributors, Inc. Both Southern Vodka and Southern Gin received recognition from the 2010 SIP Awards competition: Southern Vodka was awarded a Bronze Medal.
These are not the first awards received by the group, last year the distilleries’ initial spirit, Plantation Vodka, received a Silver Medal and Best Buy Award from the acclaimed, Beverage Tasting Institute. Kent Cost, President of Thirteenth Colony, says the craft distillery “will continue to pursue and develop unique, high quality spirits over the next several years. Our goal is not to be the largest but to make the very best spirits.” The distillery currently plans to launch a new product this fall, the first aged spirit produced by the craft distillery.
All three of the southern handcrafted spirits are available statewide in Georgia, please be sure to ask your local retailer.
